Blackjack are right up there and this is a terrific cab merlot blend. It's smooth and silky, with a plump expression of confiture-like dark plums and cassis that fills out the mid palate, but while it's moderately long, it finishes with more of a baked expression of flavour, some slightly sour edges and a hint of salty minerality. Australian Wine Vintages 92 James Halliday Vintage says slightly more complex aromas than the varietal, and despite much lower alcohol, has more texture, and attractive red and black berry fruits. Part of this block is on Castlemaine sandstone gravel rather than the very old granitic soils on the rest of the property. It ranges in body from very light to the heavier side of medium, typically landing somewhere in the middle—giving it extensive possibilities for food pairing.
